Before you start sending hate mail, remember
that I am speaking about women’s rights. Any of you recall a little Federal
Amendment by the Health and Human Services division (HHS) called Title IX? It
gave females equal rights in sports and education. Title IX of the Educational
Amendments of 1972 was to update Title VII of
the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which banned several forms of
discrimination in employment, but did not address or mention discrimination in
education. The update added protections for women that did not exist.

Title IX gave rights to girls and woman that
did not exist before. Now, our government is trying to wipe that away and
private companies & the federal teacher’s association are helping. Men have a different musculoskeletal structure
than women (just LOOK at Lia Thomas verses the women it is competing against –
the advantage is obvious). These differences are clear upon onset of puberty.
This gives men an advantage against women and trans women a big one over women.
Modifying Title IX to allow trans women in female sports or to use lockers
rooms/bathrooms for women sets women back.

Where are the feminists now?

I have said this before. Anyone recall the
Eastern Bloc athletes of the mid-20th century? Once drug testing was
enabled, too many of them were disqualified. Common drugs included testosterone
(taken by the women). This gave them an edge over their competitors. How are
the trans women any different – only their testosterone/muscles are natural.
Let trans compete in the class of the biological birth. Think about it for a
moment. How many trans men are participating in male sports?

A small percentage (less than 10%) of men
identify as female and are trans. Recently a couple of companies made the
choice to use trans “women” in ads targeting women. One in particular, Dylan
Mulvaney is wearing make-up and clothing reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn. Dylan
posted a photo wearing a Nike sportsbra – allegedly endorsed by the company. Honey
Burdette used a male model, Jake DuPree, to show off lingerie – and the company’s
motto is “Made by Women for Women”. Seriously? A trans woman was named “woman
of the year for 2023 by USA today.

What woman dresses as if it is the 1950’s on a
regular basis? What woman wears outlandish makeup (a la’ drag queen)? A trans
woman trying to honestly assimilate doesn’t want to stand out. Those who do wear
“womanface”. Natural (biological) women can decide on how much make-up (no none)
and a style of clothing that fits their activities. Most of us don’t go out resembling
June Cleaver. This is no different from a white person going out in “blackface”.
Women must wear bras at work (per most dress codes). I would choose not to if I
could, but I can’t get away by not doing so. I certainly can’t participate in
activities without one. Why marketing department feel the need to go woke and put-up
trans women instead of natural women is beyond me. Personally, I will not
purchase from those who push that agenda.

Personally, I don’t care if an adult wants to identify
as trans. That is it’s choice, but don’t compare yourself to me. I am a
biological female. I have internal female genitalia. Trans women can’t have a period
or get pregnant. None of them have the parts and that is the bottom line.
Uterine transplants do not exist (if this could be done, there would be
thousands of women in line to get it done to have a child).

I will be completely on-board with trans when the
NBA and Major League baseball recruit female. Brittney Griner should be playing
un the NBA. Have you ever watched softball? Those ladies are amazing. Imagine
how fast they could throw overhand or hard they would hit a baseball instead of
a softball. The NFL finally brought on a female referee. I’m still waiting fro
a female ref in the NHL.

I am not homophobic. My novels have gay and bi-characters through-out. I don't care who adults sleep with, but children are off limits. Minors should grow naturally (we still don't know the effects of puberty-blocking drugs on minors as there are no long-term studies). Children should wait until 18 and go through the established process of counseling before any drugs are given before transitioning.

So, send your hate mail if you want. I don’t
care. Those that do are trying to erase me as a woman. In fact, they are the
people who are unable to define what a woman is in the first place. I guess
they failed high school biology.

establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or
abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people
peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of
grievances.

Do you
recognize the above statement? You should: it is the First Amendment of the
U.S. Constitution (also referred to as the Bill of Rights). The words were meaningful and important on the day written and remain so today. People living in
the colonies prior to the American revolution dealt with harassment and prosecution
from the government regarding these issues. Once the war was over, the Founding
Fathers knew they needed to ensure future generations would have freedom guaranteed.
The Constitution was based on the Articles of Confederation, which were based
on the Magna Carta.

The First Amendment
contains basic rights: religion, speech, right to assemble, and questioning our
leaders. These are unusual in that most other countries do not protect each of
the mentioned freedoms: not even Great Britain or Canada. Religious persecution
was a large reason for people leaving their home countries for the American colonies.
Even today, in the world, countries place stigmas on those who don’t follow the
“established” faith. Media outlets are strictly regulated – news is issued by
the government (north Korea, China). Those to assemble to protest are arrested,
or worse (remember Tiananmen Square), and woman are “protected” by being kept
in the home (Iran, Iraq). As for free speech, that is a dream. Try to speak-out
in Canada or Cuba against policies and see what happens.

Freedom of
speech is nothing to laugh at. It takes courage to let someone you absolutely hate
spew filth while you stand by and listen. Shutting that speaker up is wrong. Remember:
Larry Flynt won his lawsuit under the First Amendment. Does that mean you have
to buy Hustler magazine? No, you don’t, but the right to publish it exists. The
same goes for speech. Why should we allow this? Because today it is a whack-job
talking out loud who is suppressed, but tomorrow it might be you. The videos of
young people showing up at events, lectures, school board discussions, or political
meetings to disrupt any conversation against those they disagree with is
ANTI-AMERICAN. Physically assaulting a speaker is horrific.

The Founding
Fathers would be ashamed. This is not what they envisioned for the country. Anyone
who tried to censor free speech is doing themselves a major disservice. Did their
parents not teach them any respect or manners? Did the school systems attended
not teach civics or real history?

If America is
so awful, why do people from other lands leave everything behind in their quest
to get here? If socialism or communism is so wonderful, would are people from
Cuba, Venezuela, China, or North Korea give anything to immigrate to the USA?
If this country is so evil & racist, why would people from Africa or the
middle Eats leave their birthplaces to get here? Changing or re-writing history
won’t make it go away.

Take a chance
and listen. Talk to those who left countries for freedom. Exercise the First
Amendment for both sides. You might be surprised and learn something.

Greycliffs Chronicleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17769166722380502775noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1128745668031217433.post-13062161684321852122023-03-04T08:26:00.001-08:002023-03-04T08:26:27.301-08:00My books, My words!

Woke Culture has crossed the line. Puffin Books (UK)
recently hired a group of readers to go through books and search for any words
that might offend folks (i.e. the “woke culture”). Roald Dahl was one of the first authors to
have books re-published with offensive words removed/changed. “Charlie and the
Chocolate Factory” and “James and the Giant Peach” were re-issued with changed
content. This occurred despite the late author speaking out against tis in a
1982 interview.

How can I be against publishers doing this? Isn’t this
for the greater good?

Hell no!

I have four books in print (three fiction and one
non-fiction). My books are MY creations, for better or worse. No one else has
the right to change anything in my publication. If someone has a problem with any
of my books, here is a simple solution: DON’T READ THEM! I am the only one who
can alter the language in my publications.

I don’t care what any of the idiots spouting the “wokeness”
says. It is not easy writing a book. Fiction comes from imagination. Like it or
not, books are written with a purpose. Children’s books are written to the
level of the audience, as are novels geared towards adults. Libraries have
started censoring or banning classic books due to the content. Yet, children are
being encouraged to read smut. Consider
these titles (adult and juvenile) that have been placed on the “banned” list.

To Kill a Mockingbird

Tom Sawyer

Harry Potter

Animal Farm

The Lord of the Flies

The Grapes of Wrath

The Island of the Blue Dolphins

The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn

Dr. Suess books

Where the Wild Things Are

Tell me why censorship is ok. I completely understand not
allowing books with sexually explicit material in a library section for children.
Those should be in the adult area, and certainly NOT included in a teacher’s reading
list at a school. However, don’t ban books.

Recently, I tried to find P.L. Traver’s “Mary Poppins” at
a local branch of our library. Guess what, I was unable to find any of the
series. I tried online and every book was “unavailable”. I could order the
movie, though.

Why should a majority be punished for the fears and
sensitivities of a minority? The USA was built on freedoms: the First Amendment
allows us all freedom of speech. Yes, this comes with some responsibility. One
can’t yell “Fire!” when none exists, since that can result in casualties. The
media is protected, but they also must be accountable for anything said or
written. Call me out but don’t get mad when I respond back. Freedom of speech means allowing that moron to
scream about horrible, idiotic stuff that you are against. Remember the Feds
going after Larry Flynt for publishing “Hustler” magazine. Not my cup of tea
but he had the right and won the lawsuit. Again, if you don’t care for it, don’t
read it!

Support the original works and do not buy/read modified (sensitivity-edited) books.
Greycliffs Chronicleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17769166722380502775noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1128745668031217433.post-26487979913425488742022-08-20T10:58:00.002-07:002022-08-20T10:58:31.999-07:00Model horses: Breyer verses Hartlands

How many of you collected model horses are a child? I did and still have a collection, albeit not as big. The primary difference between what I had as a kid and what I have now is the condition and worth of my horses. I don't play with them. Half of my hordes are "vintage" and others are new. I still enjoy each one. I prefer Breyer-Reeves horses but won't turn down a nice Hartland. There are other manufacturers (Peter Stone, Haken-Renaker, etc.) that produce horses and I no longer look for Marx horses (I do have a couple, though.

Hartland Plastics, Inc., was based in Hartland,
Wisconsin. The company made models from the mid-1940’s to 1969 of horses,
horse/rider combinations, dogs and other subjects. Another firm, Durant, bought and made Hartland
models until the 1970’s. The company was sold to Steven Manufacturing, Missouri
after a 10-year hiatus. They were joined by Paola through the 1990’s. The
original Hartland started out making baseball statues. Eventually, Hartland
made a large assortment of figures including religious icons and decorations.

Hartland horses come in two basic models: those destinated for riders and horses alone.
The stand-alone horses look familiar to collectors today, resembling
Breyers-Reeve models although the Hartlands came first. Horse made for riders either
came with fixed reins or holes for reins.
Hartlands are still available, but not the same variety as Breyer-Reeves.
Gail Fitch has an extensive website about Hartland and sells reference books.

Breyer Animal Models started in 1950. The first animal
made was the Western Horse clock for the Mastercrafter Clock Company (Breyer
kept the mold for future use instead of payment) and sold by C. W. Wenthworth
Co. Later, Mold #57, the Western Horse was based on the clock. When Reeves International bought Breyer in
1984, the company became Breyer-Reeves and operations were set-up in New
Jersey. The company is still Breyer-Reeves today, but most folks refer to them
as Breyer. A group of folks put out a Breyer Animal Collector’s Guide in the
1990’s to early 200’s. You can sometimes find used copies online (authors are Felicia
Brown, Kelly Korber-Weimer, and Kelly Kesicki).

How do you tell a Breyer from a Hartland? Both companies
made similar models, and in some cases, even the model colors were alike.
Hartland horses have their mane falling on right side of their necks while the
Breyer-Reeves horse manes come down on the left side (mostly this was for the
early models). Next check for a company mark. Breyer-Reeves are stamped on the
inside on the hind leg. Hartland models have more detail to the stamps and the mark
depends on when it was made. Gail Fitch’s book on Hartland horses details the
marks.

Breyer branched out with the horses making items
available in Traditional, Classic, Paddock Pals, and Stablemate sizes.
Mini-Whinnies were added later. Hartland kept to two basic sizes. Once Breyer designed came up with a new model,

People often ask me how much I think model horses are
worth. Guidebooks estimate worth, usually based on excellent or near excellent
specimens. The number manufactured, specialty coloration, and in Breyer’s case,
figure issued for Breyerfest or online, may affect prices. Bottom line: a model
is only worth what a buyer is willing to pay, no matter what the seller
believes it should sell for.

I am. I love seeing what Mother Nature brings us each day (and night). My favorite part of the sky are clouds. I also love to view stars, but the light pollution in Reno is bad these days.

Clouds a have different classifications. what is cloud is called depends on the general weather that generates the cloud. Clouds are water drops or ice crystals formed in the atmosphere. They can be seen during fair of foul weathers. Anyone recall the addege "Red sky at night sailor delight; red sky in morning, sailor take warning"? I listed a couple of links if you want to learn more about the types of clouds.

I love taking my own photographs of the formations and colors. No one can paint the sky like Gaia.

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh70p0pPJ8cGq_GP_189hqjpUsXaWALvFpHNv097eihtGho56rxYUegna5gm9y76uDf8ZyxKNHb1PRSHemEeWChC4QDrLBPS1t7rfm9x7IFBPt5YmwZglgVnZIWbohy5MXAlTk9QF6s1lCOWxF1SFVkzk2F5Zp2pJ721yG-uMLtnkP3Odiv1f5CPhb4Hw/s4608/2020%20April%20colorful%20sunrise.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Dr. Vidt.

Saturday, January 1rst, Dr. Jeffrey Vidt, DVM, was laid to rest. Who was he and why should anyone care?

Let me tell you. Dr. VIdt was a lover of animals, the reason he became a veterinarian but even more important, he loved the Chinese Shar-Pei dog. He obtained his first "peiby" in 1983. His Shar-Pei earned titles: they weren't just beloved household companions. He fostered dogs in need of temporary homes. He lived his life as a Christian and was well-respected by all who knew him.

In 2015 he realized the breed had some unique health issues, he started studying the genetics in order to help them. Dr Vidt worked with Dr. Tintle in research for diseases found in the breed. He often wrote articles for the Chinese Shar-Pei Club of America breed magazine, The Barker. One of the regular features was "Ask the Vets" where any member could post a question. The answers were written in a easy to understand manner.

The National Club appreciated his efforts and made him a Life member in 2003.

Rest in Peace, Dr. Vidt, greeted by the many Shar-Pei you helped over the years.

<a class="oajrlxb2 g5ia77u1 qu0x051f esr5mh6w e9989ue4 r7d6kgcz rq0escxv nhd2j8a9 nc684nl6 p7hjln8o kvgmc6g5 cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x jb3vyjys rz4wbd8a qt6c0cv9 a8nywdso i1ao9s8h esuyzwwr f1sip0of lzcic4wl gpro0wi8 py34i1dx" href="https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwestsuburbanfh.com%2Fjeffrey-w-vidt-dvm%2F%3Ffbclid%3DIwAR1d8UBMRiiFl0e3rmLdbCEvKb0or3WroApyU4cLaBIp9p1mLXjgQFMP9SI&h=AT3DitIA1EvB-ErMzEtSwo9r8kjGBMqM0dYD4Jzh5qUqeExq0fwca8sml2SWDWSu50knlPywPvwLwXrZ06ydOuNUVJpX2OiS4orYXs40k4__uUUz_3CzWNzDp_5_2zFCS4Z3&__tn__=-UK-y-R&c[0]=AT1z6Dyvto3MgauYuKP-oltiYNitAmDDD2REAW36LW1648lB4ggFj-h-DGhX7iEOLl91iyml6ZKwPMSx_b7mlt88HToUuTLkIwd_7PD-AW23KpiUey-vHKqo-MjoPJUEYTpFTFxiQH16XJHUXXuVfYJuFfqNN03wCWtvu-Naxyd9M2zlCIObOLv9C-MR4FPyzchQYPEmwM6HuTR2PvUBxMQbrhdoNSz-YW5GT5AbBL65q_o" rel="nofollow" role="link" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background-color: white; border-color: initial; border-style: initial; border-width: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; cursor: pointer; display: inline; font-family: "Segoe UI Historic", "Segoe UI", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; list-style: none; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; touch-action: manipulation; white-space: pre-wrap;" tabindex="0" target="_blank">https://westsuburbanfh.com/jeffrey-w-vidt-dvm/...
Greycliffs Chronicleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17769166722380502775noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1128745668031217433.post-79651170366362229152021-02-20T06:04:00.000-08:002021-02-20T06:04:02.917-08:00Is it time for Radio to give up codes?
To date myself, I remember a time when 9-1-1 was NOT universal and payphones could be found every couple of blocks. In fact, one could receive calls at a pay phone! Every agency I have worked for, except ONE, was using paper logs and converted to a computerized dispatch system (four agency conversations).

All law enforcement departments use codes of some sort. It may be for patrol duties, warrants, or special circumstances but there are some. Others may have codes for unique situations. EMS and fire went to plain talk long ago. They discovered codes can be mistaken. There are no issues with the spoken words (well, not as many).

Belonging to an online Dispatcher group, one person asked about one particular code:10-7. This has a dual meaning for the agency in question. Out of service OR dead body. Hold the phone! If it's used, which one? That is confusing and hence the problem with dual meanings. Pick one and make a code for the other. This is also an excellent argument for plain talk and cell phones (call in the dead body) and say busy or not available over the radio.

Let's be real: codes were developed for two reasons in the 1920's. The first was to reduce precious time on the new resource. The second was to confuse anyone listening in, especially once the public found a way to listen in. The second reason became useless once Radio Shack started publishing their radio frequency guide with various codes listed. The internet made it stupid with lists of local codes.

Give up the codes!
Greycliffs Chronicleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17769166722380502775noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1128745668031217433.post-1159214220975543762020-12-12T07:17:00.008-08:002020-12-12T07:17:58.212-08:00Shopping local verses chain stores this season - why?

Small businesses are dying. If we don’t help out this
Christmas season, only “big-box” stores and internet giants will be left. I don’t
know about most folks, but I like shopping at independent stores. I like the “mom
& pop” stores. It is fun to see things I can’t find in chain stores.

If we do not act, we will be left with Wal-Mart, Home
Dept, Lowes, and other corporate chains, along with Amazon as our only choices.
The options have already diminished. Mid-Town, downtown, and other “Main-Street”
USA areas will become ghost towns of empty buildings and vacant strip malls.

I will give you an example of what I am speaking of. When
I was growing up and wanted a book I was able to go the a dozen different
places depending on what I wanted. For new books, I could shop at J.K. Gill,
Walden, Barnes & Noble, or Borders. There were multiple independent sellers
as well. For used books I had a choice of stores catering to vintage/used and
there were the used/exchange stores. Finally, I could go to thrift stores. For
children’s books, I could go to a toy store.

Fast forward to now. What is left? A handful of used bookstores, a couple of
struggling independents (mostly locals), and Barnes & Noble. Frankly,
Barnes & Noble survives because they participate in combined online &
local sales. What happened to the toy stores? Talk about a dinosaur.

Now, go to Wal-Mart or Target and you will find the same
basic inventory. If you want a specific title, either go when the book is first
released, pre-order it, or get it online. Stores carry a limited inventory now.

I understand about inventory. Merchandise on the shelves
is money. It needs to move (sell), therefore only items deemed saleable are
kept. Who decides what is popular? Who decides which boo is to be pushed?
Afterall, the magazines that once reviewed new books are defunct. Unless one follows a particular author, how do
you pick a book? Our booth has a lot of money tied up in inventory. I know
about theft because stuff has “walked away” in large purses or backpacks. I
understand about damaged goods for the same reason after finding fragile pieces
with broken parts put back on shelves. This is the reason I have alarmed cabinets
after having locks jimmied.

Which brings me to my original point. Choices. When shopping,
do you want to see what you buy before you purchase it or want to take the
chance on waiting for It to be delivered. Is the piece of merchandise that
arrives what you ordered? Did it arrive on time? Is it intact, or did it arrive
damaged? What if it was the wrong item/ How much of a hassle is it to be
returned? What if you never received the purchased piece but were still
charged. Is there a place to get your money back?

When you shop local you can decide before buying the gift,
if it is the right one You can inspect it for defects. If the item is new, it
can be returned. Maybe the item has color options: you can see which one is
best instead of relying on bad photos. You don’t have to wait for a package to
ship. Best yet, you are helping to keep a neighbor, or possibly a family
member, in business.

So, this Christmas season, maybe for one gift, go to a
local shop instead of Wal-Mart, Target, or any other chain store. That one
purchase might mean the difference between staying open and closing the doors
forever for the business owner in a tough year.

Thank you and Merry Christmas.

Greycliffs Chronicleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17769166722380502775noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1128745668031217433.post-52117461161031876562020-11-28T09:34:00.002-08:002020-11-28T09:34:18.446-08:00Shop local and keep small businesses afloat
We are looking at the death of the "Mom & Pop" business if folks do not purchase from the small merchants this season. Let's face it folks, Big box stores and internet sellers started the downfall of specialty and local stores, and COvid-19 hasn't help.

In our case, we were doing okay at the beginning of the year. Sales started improving to the point we expanded and were hopeful at an even bigger expansion by the end of the year. Then the crud showed up and BAM! Shut-down for two months. Limited opening and a slow start now. Folks have been terrified by the media. Don't go out - you might die from Covid! Stores continue to get threatened by the government if folks don't follow "the rules". Forget that there aren't any actual LAWS in place. Sadly, every week there seems to be another building with a "Gone out of business" sign on the window.

If local shops are to survive, and you want a choice other than Wal-Mart or Amazon, please make some of your purchases at your local stores this holiday season. You will help the economy, keep the sales taxes in your city, and prevent a small business owner from closing their doors - and laying off employees.

We all win. Thank you.

Merry Christmas!

Greycliffs Chronicleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17769166722380502775noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1128745668031217433.post-26083590567046017202020-11-27T15:20:00.000-08:002020-11-27T15:20:08.056-08:00Old-Timers, Dispatchers, and Death after Retirement

Remember the first day in the Communications Center as a
probationary Dispatcher? There may have been (depending on the staffing levels)
a mix of ages but guaranteed, there was at least one or two “old salts” on the
staffing list. Perhaps he/she was friendly but most likely the veteran Dispatcher(s)
were aloof.

Why, you probably asked yourself, is that person so gruff
or mean? Why can’t he/she have more patience? Why does he/she seem so critical
or the new rookies? I bet you even promised yourself you would never get like
that.

Those old dogs knew a lot, didn’t they? You could ask
just about any question and not stump them. They were almost unflappable. Many worked the
system before cell phones, digital phones, the internet, personal computers,
and in some cases, computer-aided-dispatch systems (CAD). A few even remembered
basic 9-1-1 upgrades or a time before paramedics ran advanced life support.
Somehow, without the advanced technology, the managed to get the job done.

Funny, now you ARE that old-timer. How often do you
mutter about the newbies? How often are you tapped about agency history or
obscure questions? There is a saying, “He/she knows where the ‘bodies’ are buried”
Not in the literal sense, of course but you probably know a lot about the
skeletons of the agency. At least, you understand “why” strange procedures are
in place (there is always a reason, right?). Who else can recall the
off-the-wall CAD commands or knows who that person calling is, who claims to be
a retired officer?

Change can be tough.
Our profession demands we adapt and yet calls still come in via
telephones. The primary means of communication is still via a two-way radio.
9-1-1 has evolved with text-to-9-1-1. Documentation of events is via CAD
instead of paper. We no longer change huge reel-to-reel logging tapes; instead,
our recordings are via digital loggers often maintained on “the cloud”.

Despite all the upgrades, people are flesh and blood. The
human factor has not different and no automatic system will take away the Public
Safety Telecommunicator (once known as Dispatcher). The was position once
relegated to light-duty field units and then given to civilian personnel. Now,
no basic Administrative Assistant can walk in and take over the job without
specialized training. No light-duty field unit could do the same. So, why won’t
the Feds re-classify our (PST) position as “First Responders”?

Good question. The Associated Public Safety Communications
Officials (APCO) and the National Emergency Number Association (NENA) continue
to press Washington to do this.

Meanwhile…

Mortality lies to slap humans upside the head on occasion
to remind each of us we are not going to live forever. This week I opened an
email to learn of a death of a retired officer I once worked with. A few weeks
ago, another one had passed on. That is two within a short time. Two men from
different agencies, both well respected, with a long history of accolades.

I am starting to lose count of the retired co-workers who
have left this Earth.

Sadly, I am a member of thee “baby-boomer” generation.
That means older members of friends, family, and those now retired, are
reaching the point where their days are numbered. I know it is only a matter of
time before the phone calls shatter my composure.

It really does suck getting older.

Dave: I’ll miss your candor and sense of humor. You led
by example. You were also my first real contact with NDOW. We spent most of the
interview exchanging stories and laughing. Hugh: respect, man. You always gave credit
where it was due. You took care of your area and was a mentor to so many. Both
of you will be missed. Rest in Peace.

Greycliffs Chronicleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17769166722380502775noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1128745668031217433.post-70998485177279126312020-09-04T16:11:00.002-07:002020-09-04T16:11:50.661-07:00Halloween and Ghostbusters fiasco
We love Halloween. This week the costume and gadget supply stores opened up. For legal reason, I won't give the name, but it has a HUGE orange banner. We have been to both of them in town already.

The first day, we bought a couple of fun accessories. Sam drooled over the Ghostbuster section. He has a great idea for a costume but he decided to wait and think it over. None of the pieces were cheap.

Today we decided to go for it and went to the other superstore. He picked out the items for his costume while I grabbed my costume and a t-shirt that caught my fancy. The store had online coupons for 20% off one item, so I printed out two. We paid separately and each used a coupon: the cashier chuckled. He knew what we were doing but hey, the store didn't put any restrictions on us doing it.

When we made it home we unpacked the Ghostbuster official accessories. To our surprise, none of them , had any directions/instructions. We managed to figure out how to work the Night Goggles, PKE Meter, and the Walkie-Talkie. When it came to the Proton Pack, FORGET it!

Try to find a diagram on where to battery pack is. GOOD luck. We found it by trial and error after a fifteen minute search. There are multiple warning stickers on the pack but NOTHING on how to actually make the lights and sounds work. No explanation or instructions sheet is included. There is nothing on the box. Go to the company website and again: zilch!

Sam called Corporate and was transferred around but finally spoke to a technical person. He was unable to find anything on his end...what does that say about a product when the Corporate Technical geeks can't figure things out? In fact, it took him a while to even locate the item! After talking to Sam, the guy started to worry about what else had been shipped out without any help sheets.

Makes one wonder.

We took it back to the store and explained what happened. They were very apologetic. The staff did go through a couple of others with the same result. The manager said she was going to pull the items until this issue was corrected as she didn't want to face an angry parent with a screaming kid.

Is this just a poor design or were the packs beat to death in transit? Were they tested before being shipped? What about the animatronic things? Is there a problem with those to?

Is this China's revenge to sell us Ghostbuster toys that are defective? OMG, is this Trump's fault (just kidding) - wait, I bet the marketing person is a Democrat who is still mad Hillary lost. Why else would we get teased with items we can't use as promised?

<sigh>

I still love Halloween and am hopeful the Proton Pack issue will be resolved. They have our number and said they would call if a working one was located.

Greycliffs Chronicleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17769166722380502775noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1128745668031217433.post-51313787913528853712020-07-24T08:25:00.000-07:002020-07-24T08:25:15.035-07:00Facebook page
We now have a Facebook page for your business! No, there is no need to name the place or names - those have been given enough press by now.

People were already frustrated by the mandatory quarantine and the death ignited a firestorm of emotions. Nationwide protest marches were organized.

I get that. America was a long history of legal, non-violent, protesting. I am okay with that. When walking turns to looting, burning, and destruction - or even worse, hurting others, that is wrong in my book.

Sadly, the chaos we have seen in our cities has nothing to do with the death of one black man, in my opinion. Those contributing to his death will face the criminal justice system and the due process associated with it. That is how our system works. Burning down a neighbor's home or business won't help any cause and actually makes things worse.

I tried to ask a relative of mine why there wasn't the same outrage for the crazy amount of injuries and deaths among the inner-city minorities. My husband and I lived and worked in multiple inner city areas. We saw the poverty and crime. It hasn't changed since the 1980's. Where are the marches for those victims?

I'll tell you: those men, women, and children do not meet a need for a political adjenda. No one cares so no one screams out for the injustices done against them. Point it out to the millennials and you are called racist.

No, I'm not. No one ordered me or my husband to work in East Los Angeles or Oakland. We CHOSE to work and live there. My husband and I helped folks because they needed it.

Racist? You better look in the mirror before you call either if us racist.

It is time to move on folks and realize that people should be judged by actions, not skin color. Get rid of the "whatever-American" and just say "American". Be proud of who we are as a country.

Just saying.

Our Department's office are closed until further notice but Dispatch is working normal hours (subject to change). We have been ordered to practice social distancing, which is not a problem. Our work stations are well past the "six feet" recommendation. Law Enforcement officers are not allowed in Dispatch at all. If any of them need to pick up paperwork, we have to step outside and hand them sealed envelopes. All of those "nice-to-do" project put on a shelf are in progress. That is good. We are taking online classes for self-improvement - another positive.

We are practicing the cleansing of Dispatch as often as practical. We haven't resorted to wearing masks at work yet as some Communication Centers have done. Patrol activity has reduced due to the concern for field unit safety. Try explaining that to a frustrated public. Our calls remain about the same but the type of calls have changed. We are receiving more of the question calls normally taken by regional offices along with the usual queries. The boating season unofficially starts in April, but Lake Mead is almost shut down for boating. When it does open, it will be a "boat explosion". We will go from nothing to crazy in 60 seconds.
<strike></strike>
We all know this will eventually return to a "normal" at some point. What is weird is the quiet. The traffic outside is lessened. Many of the downtown casinos have shut off the lights. Some folks are out but the steady stream of folks enjoying the river walks, parks, and trails are gone. The BLM Fire cameras show ski parks without skiers or snowboarders. A series of storms expected this weekend will add more snow and leave a pristine layer of snow in the mountains, April is spring and I would be spending my off days planting flowers but the nurseries don't have any plant deliveries yet.

To all of my brothers and sisters in Public Safety and health care, stay safe. To everyone else manning the essential services, thank you and stay safe as well. For the rest, it will get better, just be patient.
For those who might need a little direction, here are some suggestions:

1. Read a book or re-read one of your favorite books.

2. Start a craft project that you have been putting off. Craftsy has online classes in all sorts of skills (knitting, crochet, painting, sewing, culinary, etc.)
.
3. Re-organize your pantry. Toss out any items expired. DO you really need to keep that cold cream from 1998?

4. Go through the medicine cabinet and organize the jumbled mess.

5. Organize the linens. Wash and put sets together (keep sheet sets together in a inside-out pillow case).

6. Play some board games with the family.

7. Write letters (not email) to old friends or elderly family members.

8. Organize the photos - note who is on them with dates and place names.

9. Plan your spring garden.

10. Alphabetize your movie, CDs, and books.

See, it's not difficult to come up with things to do.

Greycliffs Chronicleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17769166722380502775noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1128745668031217433.post-33922565899173299522020-03-19T07:51:00.000-07:002020-03-19T07:51:56.134-07:00When we look backGovernor Sisolak ordered a 30 day shut-down of all non-essential businesses on March 17th. Many other states have done the same and a couple have gone so far as to mandate curfews or activate their National Guard.

Now, don't get me wrong here. I understand that this virus is serious to those vulnerable folks at risk (extremely old, very young, or people with compromised immune systems). The rest of us would just come down with (most likely) bad colds. In fact, many people who tested positive didn't know they had Covid-19 - they thought they have the flu. So, implementing these extreme measures seems draconic.

Excuse me, but are we at war?

How many businesses will close down permanently due to the proclamation? In Reno and Sparks(Washoe County, NV), we have been dealing with a couple of years of horrible Public Work road projects. The planning of the "neighborhood road beautification projects has been a nightmare. In some parts, multiple lane access roads were taken down to one lane in each direction with widened sidewalks. We watched as businesses closed and never opened back up. In a section called Midtown, it's happening again. Between the construction and now the ordered shut-down, that part of town may never recover.

In times of emergency the government has to take action. We all get that. I have lived through two major earthquakes, multiple wildland fires, a flood, and a riot. In none of those circumstances, were businesses ordered to shutdown. There were limitations for public safety purposes, obviously.

I believe our government is reacting as "the sky is falling" and our President will be blamed. Sadly, we kept hearing for months BEFORE this virus reared it's ugly head from the Democrats that we were headed for a recession despite the surging economy. It took this virus to kill things and now they seems to smiling. Of course they are pleased, to get a tanking economy. What they don't understand is that the American people are pissed off at those making the stoppage orders and putting out the fear-mongering news.

We will get over this and come back stronger as we always do. I think, and this is my opinion, the Sisolak is done as Governor. As for Reno Mayor Schieve, it is time for new leadership.Greycliffs Chronicleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17769166722380502775noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1128745668031217433.post-59621270246818816212020-01-18T13:54:00.002-08:002020-01-18T13:54:55.884-08:00Goodbye to the "HRH" Prince Henry and MeghanThe Queen can't be amused and I have no doubt Princess Diana wouldn't be happy with her son.
Harry, the Duke of Sussex (the soon-to-be former HRH Prince Henry of Windsor) and his wife, Meghan, the Duchess, have been granted their wish to break away from the Royal Family. Technically, they will have their titles for private use but neither will be allowed to use the titles in public as they will no longer be working members of the Royal family. They won't be allowed to represent the Queen and Harry must resign from his military appointments. They won't receive money from Public funds. The couple will be required to pay back the money spent on refurbishing Frogmore Cottage. The argument has already started on who (which country or person) will pay for the Sussexes' security.

The train wreck keeps growing.

It came out that Harry had been in discussion with the Queen, Prince Charles, and Prince William for some time about resigning from his duties. Since he was born a Prince, he will remain one but the other titles were granted to him upon his marriage to Meghan. Should he loose those (he is also the Baron of Kilkeel and the Earl of Dumbarton), the Monarch would need to give them back. When talks didn't move along quick enough, Harry and Meghan made the announcement before the negotiations were completed.

It makes one wonder if they had this planned all along? The Crown and Country paid for their wedding and the Country paid for Frogmore's upgrades. Maybe they were good after the wedding but I think this was in the works when the house was being renovated.

All of the changes don't go into effect until the Spring. No firm date was given, only "Spring of 2020" but that is vague. Meanwhile, our two junior "Senior Royals" will continue with their duties. Supposedly there have been a few "boos" at a couple of appearances. I imagine Harry and Meghan will have to get used to that. It is confusing. An actual date of change would be nice. Today you're a "HRH" ad tomorrow you're not.

So how will Harry and Meghan earn a living? It has been rumored Meghan signed a contract with Disney to work in a capacity of voice-overs in return for charitable contributions. If she no longer has the HRH restrictions, Meghan could work for money. Harry could accept speaking engagements. Still, the two have made an agreement to keep up the standards & values of the Queen and Crown in their work. Her Royal Highness allegedly was not happy with her grandson and his wife. It is rumored that Harry's dad, Prince Charles was "livid" at the result.

What exactly does that mean? Does the agreement spell out what the two can or can't do? It does mention a "review" to be held in a year by The Queen, Prince Charles, and Prince William. I do believe Harry and Meghan will have a surprise in store when they get hit by a tax bill. After all, as non-Royal working folks, they will be subject to Her Majesty's fiscal tax folks and the Prince has never had to worry about his expenses before. Who will end up the bread-winner in the Sussex family?

The big issue will be the cost of the Sussexes' security detachment. Will Charles continue to pay for his son and his wife? The Palace is keeping quiet on this topic, which is typical. Buckingham never comments on security. Public comment is mixed so far.

I hope it all works out for Harry & Meghan as there is no going back. Harry's great Uncle, David, learned that the hard way when he married Wallis Simpson.
It can be found at Second Street and Sierra.
The store has been described as a mall without walls. with three levels of booths. Our fellow dealers have everything from jewelry, fine furniture, books, toys, and gag gifts to the obscure collectibles.
We also have an eclectic collection of household goods, figurines, and firefighting-related collectibles. Want to add some decent vintage silver plate hollowware or nice little ceramic pieces to fill a stocking? We have them!

Winter is coming and we have Game of Thrones merchandise. And for those soon-to-be cold winter days, come grab a couple of dollar paperbacks - and a free bookmark!

The leaves have fallen and we are getting ready to change the clocks back. That means the holiday season is upon us but that is not what this post is about.

Nope.

Fall brings an increased amount of bear activity. Yes, friends, those pesky bruins are doing their best to fatten up for the winter.

Before bears can settle down foe the winter hibernation, they need to put on the pounds. Their bodies depend on the fat gained during the fall while they "sleep". Bears can awake during winter, so seeing a bear wander is not unusual. Don't be surprised if you see a bear walking around during the daylight. Black bears come in a variety of colors. Once a bear choses a den, it will stick to it, so be sure to close off open areas under your house or deck!

Bears are basically lazy creatures and don't want to waste calories in their search for food, hence the liking for trash. Most areas in bear-country have some sort of ordinance requiring trash cans and dumpsters to be secured or locked. This is a deterrent against bears (and other wildlife).

Other common-sense practices to keep bears away include keeping animal feed locked up and inside a building. Don't put out bird seed until there is snow on the ground (or if you do, scatter it on the ground). Pick up fruit. Protect chicken coops and bee hives with electrified fencing. Don't leave food (or food wrappers/containers) in vehicles. Keep trash cans in a bear box and lock dumpsters.

While Public Safety Personnel struggle to contain and fight the menace, those affected by the disasters are asking questions.

Why do these terrible conflagrations continue to occur every year? Why do the fires seem to get bigger and cause more destruction?

Why can't we stop them?

To understand the cycle we have to go back decades. In my lifetime, environmental policies have changed and must take a big part of the blame. For example, in the sixties and seventies, when my husband was growing up in the Bay Area, folks would clear out overgrowth, trim tree, clear out dead trees, and generally maintain fire breaks on their property. Those who didn't were cited by local fire departments.

In our forests, logging companies had contracts to remove dead trees. During the process of cutting down trees, thick underbrush was thinned out. Concerns about clear-cutting led to responsible logging policies.

Did wildfires happen? Yes but generally the fires were not as bad although there were exceptions.

Environmentalists like Rachel Carson led the way to reform in the early 1960's. Eventually, fire departments were forced to change how they managed lands in the jurisdictions. Some Bay Area counties reversed how land management polices. Now, residents were cited for clearing growth, trimming trees, etc.! Changing the "natural" landscape was upsetting the balance. Never mind that it increased fire danger! The politicians are to blame for the legislation changing how the land is managed. "Green Policies" have tied the hands of those who would fix antiquated issues, including the utilities companies. They are mandated by law to spend money on green power that could have been spent clearing brush and upgrading lines.

Now, let's add another factor: the firefighting methods. Despite newer ways of battling fires, wildland fire management has not evolved at all. Ground crews still fight fires using the same methods developed in the 20th century. The planes and helicopters drop red clay and water instead of newer gel.

There is a third factor: the human one. Housing communities are placed in areas where access is questionable at best. We've all been to those neighborhoods to visit friends or family. The two roads in the twisty "exclusive" areas. Narrow roads on hills. Non-native landscaping, grown too close to houses without mandatory firebreaks. Wood homes, wood-shake rooftops, and no suppression systems. No requirement to keep trees clear of power lines (isn't that the responsibility of the power company?) - and if you do it on your own, a risk of being cited by the HOA for "spoiling the view". Honestly, I can see insurance companies requiring new homes to be built of stucco with metal rooftops.

Finally, there is a Public Safety personnel aspect. Let us be honest here. Fighting fires is big business. Prior to October, I heard grumbling from those in the profession because there had not been any"big" fires, which meant no overtime. Over the years, the rumor mill has whispered about not rushing to put out fires. Of course, folks don't hesitate to protect life. This goes along with the gradual change from the handling of structural fires. Most of us have the classic image of a firefighter putting out a single family house fire from inside a building (interior attack) yet the reality is now more fires are handled from outside (exterior attack). Why place personnel at risk unless people need to be rescued? Again, different structures require different methods. An apartment building may need an interior attack. A strip mall may be fought from outside. It all depends upon what is inside the building and what is adjoining. More departments are going with safety. Honestly, can you blame them?

Will these fires continue?

Absolutely. Until the Department of the Interior, along the EPA, various Fire Associations, and the individual States get together and decide to make some major changes in land management policies, these wildland fires will happen every year. Construction permits should require a minimal firebreak between homes, better fire-proof standards, and improved services BEFORE the "future site" sign is placed in the ground.
