Teeange Mutant Ninja Hertl: San Jose Sharks' Rookie Sensation

The San Jose Sharks Ice Hockey Club obviously didn't read The Hockey News 2013-2014 Season Preview Issue which gave them 19-1 odds of winning the Stanley Cup. The team has won all three season opener games to date.

On Thursday, October 03, the men in teal beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-1. The team followed up with a 4-1 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday, October 5th. The third game, played Tuesday, October 8th against the New York Rangers was a blow-out, with the Sharks winning 9-2.

The home opener win had goals scored by four different players: Brett Burns, Justin Braun, Patrick Marleau, and Tommy Wingels. Logan Couture was the first Star, Tommy Wingels the Second, and Tomas Hertl the Third. Antti Niemi earned with win.

For the game against the Coyotes, Tomas Hertl scored twice (one power play goal), Patrick Marleau lit up the red light for his second, and Logan Couture found the empty net for his first of the year. Niemi was in net for his second win. Marc-Edouard Vlasic was the Third Star, Mike Smith (Phoenix) was the Second, and Tomas Hertl was names First Star of the Games AND of the overall NHL for the night!

For Tuesday's game, Tomas had an incredible night. Forget that he scored four goals, which any player would be excited about, this was his second consecutive multiple-point game. A hat trick is rare enough to make any player jump for joy. His mother was crying with happiness while her son celebrated on the ice. Three minutes later, Tomas made a highlight goal, shooting between his legs with a back-hand move to ear his fourth goal! WOW!! That earned him the First Star of the game and of the League for the second time this week.

The crowd and the announcers were calling him Teenage Mutant Ninja Hertl. I think think 'Sniper' fits him. What a gifted set of hands. Goalies of the league, you have all been warned: Hertl is on the loose.

What a great year to be a San Jose Sharks fan!!

Go Sharks!!
