November was a fun month for our San Jose
Sharks. A total of 26 points were up for grabs and Team Teal bagged 19, added
to October’s 22, leaves the Sharks with 41 for the month. The team kept up
their tenacious play. In thirteen games, the team won five in regulation, lost
two and sent six to extra time. Of the six that needed overtime or went to a
shoot-out, San Jose won four and lost two. The team’s moved up and down the
different Power Rankings NHL, The Hockey News, ESPN, and the Bleacher Report
have bounced the Boys in Teal from the No. one all the way to eighth place and
various places in-between. Ironically, the last placing has San Jose #2 to the
St. Louis Blues, a team they smacked down 6-3 on November 29th. The
only team that has had San Jose’s number so far is the Chicago Blackhawks, but
the anticipated future return of Raffi Torres just might be that final piece in
SJ’s defensive toughness to solve that puzzle.
Just
how deceptive are the win/loss stats? In the Western Conference, the Sharks are
ranked #3 in wins; #1 in least amount of games
lost; #1 in games lost in OT (okay, not a great
stat);#2 in points, just three under Chicago
with 44 (and two more games); and in Regulation plus overtime wins, San Jose
ranks #5. Taking about goals, San Jose is #2
in scoring goals and #4 in allowing opponents to score on them for a
differential of a +32 (that’s #1 in the
Conference and the League). At home, they stand at #4 for wins and away they
are #2. In their last ten games, the Shark’s
record was 8-1-1 (#1), and they currently stand on
a five game streak (#2).
The
first four games of the month were rough, although the shoot-out loss to Winnipeg
almost went the Sharks way but for a disallowed goal in overtime. Too many
sloppy plays giving away leads and a few questionable soft goals led T-Mac to
single out Nemo. The message was heard, and with the exception of the Chicago
game, the team managed to keep the goals against low for the rest of the month.
Some
highlights include the return of Brent Burns, which was topped by his hat trick
against the St. Louis Blues. Tomas Hertl remains on the top of the rookie
standings, with his 13 goals and 8 assists for a total of 21 points. Scoring is
coming from all four lines: an important part of any Cup winning team. Captain
Joe Thornton is showing the way, not only working the board and behind the net,
but leading the team with 29 points. When Jumbo shoots, goals happen. No slackers
themselves, Logan, Patrick, and Joe (P) are in the top twenty-five for goals
and points. Justin Braun is ranked number one in the plus/minus category at a
+19.
What
is different about the team’s play this year so far?
Even
in the losses, the guys continue to play the puck. Coach McLellan has
emphasized shooting the puck and he’s not above scrambling the lines around
when scoring goes down. Goals aren’t being tallied by a couple of guys. Out of
24 players, 18 have goals and 20 have assists. Only three players have a
negative ‘plus/minus’ number. 20 guys have penalty minutes – proving that the
team is no push-over. The power play needs some improvement, the team standing
at 18.8% (ranked at 14th place). On the other end, the penalty kill
is 84.2% - good enough for 12th place in the overall standings. The
Sharks have been very good at the face-off, winning the puck drop an average of
53.4% which places them at 3rd place. San Jose out-shoots their opponents
0.778% of the time, which is the best in the league; averaging 35.8 shots per
game for 1rst place. In the goals per game category, San Jose is getting an
average of 3.42 (#3).
Keeping up this pace for a full 82 game season
won’t be easy, but then no one said winning the Stanley Cup was supposed to be
a walk in the park. This 2013-2014 team has the full range of talent including
skaters, coaching staff, and support personnel to go all the way. The biggest
obstacle to San Jose hoisting the Cup are the Sharks themselves.
